ICC Men's T20 World Cup

 

*Introduction*


- The ICC Men's T20 World Cup, formerly the ICC World Twenty20, is a cricket tournament held by the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 2007.

- The tournament is held every two years.

- The 2020 edition was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman instead of India.

- Eight editions have been played, with 21 teams competing in total.

- The West Indies and England have won the most titles, with two each.


*History*


- The first tournament was held in 2007 in South Africa, with India winning the final against Pakistan.

- The 2009 tournament was held in England and won by Pakistan, who beat Sri Lanka in the final.

- The third tournament was held in the West Indies in 2010 and won by England, who beat Australia in the final.

- The 2012 tournament was held in Sri Lanka and won by the West Indies, who beat Sri Lanka in the final.

- The 2014 tournament was held in Bangladesh and won by Sri Lanka, who beat India in the final.

- The 2016 tournament was held in India and won by the West Indies, who beat England in the final.

- The 2021 tournament was held in the UAE and Oman and won by Australia, who beat New Zealand in the final.

- The 2022 tournament was held in Australia and won by England, who beat Pakistan in the final.



*Format*


- The tournament is divided into four groups of five teams each for the group stage.

- The top two teams in each pool advance to the Super 8 stage.

- Teams are ranked against each other based on the following criteria:

    - Higher number of points

    - Higher number of wins

    - Higher net run rate

    - Lower bowling strike rate

    - Result of head-to-head meeting

- In case of a tie, a Super Over would decide the winner.


*Hosts*


- The International Cricket Council's executive committee votes for the hosts of the tournament after examining bids from the nations.

- The 2024 tournament is being co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States.

- The 2026 tournament will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

- The 2028 edition will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

- The 2030 tournament will be co-hosted by England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland.


*Qualification*


- All ICC full members qualify automatically for the tournament.

- The remaining places are filled by other ICC members through a qualification tournament.

- The number of teams qualifying through the World Twenty20 Qualifier has varied.


*Trophy*


- The ICC Men's T20 World Cup Trophy is presented to the winners of the final.

- It was designed and manufactured by Links of London and is made of silver and rhodium.

- It weighs approximately 7.5 kg (17 lb) and stands 51 cm (20 in) tall.
